Icon the Mic King – Snake Oil ft Slug

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Check out this track featuring Slug (atmosphere) on Icon the Mic King & Chum’s 2009 release “Flavor Ade”

“Philadelphia’s MiC K!NG originally came up as a champion battle rapper and freestyle master who is known for his mind boggling performances and relentless touring worldwide. Over the years he has toured and collaborated with everyone from multiple members of Wu-Tang to Jus Allah of Jedi Mind Tricks. Chum is better known as the head producer for the CT crew Demigodz- home base of artists such as Apathy and Celph Titled.

Flavor Ade, named for the bootleg cousin of Kool Aid (a reference to a forthcoming project by the duo), is a sugar-packed high energy album that showcases a lyrically playful side to MiC K!NG which has largely been hidden in the past behind complex writing. Chum’s beats are as classic as ever- bringing everything from disco tinged drums to new jack swing throwbacks into the mix. It’s no surprise that MiC K!NG & Chum compare themselves to a modern day “Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff” and even do a perfectly re-worked cover of that groups’ “I’m All That.” Flavor Ade brings elements of fun 90s hip hop back without being completely nostalgic or forgetting the modern day super lyricism and progressive beats that this dynamic duo is loved for.”

BK-One’s Debut Album “Radio do Canibal”

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

BK-One (known for his work as Brother Ali’s DJ) has joined up with beatmaker Benzilla to bring his debut album “Radio do Canibal”.  The album draws its inspiration from Central and South American music found by BK-One on his travels.

The album title “refers to the Brazilian poet Oswald de Andrade’s “Cannibal Manifesto”. Written in 1928, the poem described Brazil as drawing its power from the absorption of other cultures. Decades later, Brazilians were creating wildly inventive music that drew inspiration from a wide range of sources. From the Brazilian sounds of bossa nova, Bahian folk, and samba, to international styles like psychedelic pop, reggae, Portuguese fado, and the soul, jazz, and funk music of the U.S., nothing was off limits.”

The album features an impressive cast of emcees laying down lyrics over the music the two have created including: Scarface, Slug (Atmosphere), Black Thought (The Roots), Brother Ali, Raekwon (Wu-Tang Clan), Murs (Living Legends), Phonte (Little Brother), Haiku D’ Etat (Aceyalone, Myka 9 & Abstract Rude), Blueprint, P.O.S. (Doomtree), The Grouch (Living Legends), I Self Devine, Toki Wright, Aby Wolf and The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.
